Suggillation, also known as ecchymosis or bruising, is a medical term that refers to the discoloration of the skin or underlying tissues due to the escape of blood from ruptured blood vessels into the surrounding areas. It is typically caused by trauma or injury to the affected area, resulting in the release of blood that accumulates under the skin, giving rise to a characteristic bluish-purple or blackish coloration. Suggillation can occur anywhere on the body but is often most visible on the surface of the skin.
The process of suggillation begins with the breakage of blood vessels, which may be caused by various factors such as direct impact, pressure, or certain medical conditions. When blood leaks from the damaged blood vessels, it spreads into the nearby tissues and undergoes chemical changes that give the bruise its distinctive color. Initially, the bruise may appear red or purplish in color, indicating the presence of fresh blood. Over time, as the body metabolizes the trapped blood cells and nutrients, the bruise typically changes to greenish or yellowish hues before finally fading away.
Suggillation is not usually a cause for concern unless it occurs without any apparent cause or is accompanied by additional symptoms that may indicate an underlying medical condition.
