The term "sudorikeratosis" is derived from the combination of two Latin words: "sudor," which means sweat, and "keratosis," which refers to the abnormal thickening and hardening of the skin. It is also known by alternative names such as palmoplantar keratoderma with eccrine gland alteration and sweat duct dilation.
Individuals with sudorikeratosis typically present with thickened, rough, and scaly skin on the palms and soles. The affected areas may also become red, inflamed, and tender, leading to discomfort and pain during activities that involve gripping or walking. Additionally, excessive sweating may result in increased moisture on the affected palms and soles.
The exact cause of sudorikeratosis remains unknown, and there are only limited treatment options available. Some approaches aim to manage symptoms by reducing excessive sweating, softening the skin with moisturizers, and using topical medications to promote skin exfoliation. In severe cases, surgical procedures such as excision of affected skin or sympathectomy may be considered as a last resort.
