The word "Suchia" is an English term derived from the scientific classification system used for reptiles. It is the plural form of the taxonomic order "Succi", which encompasses a group of reptiles known as "crocodile-line archosaurs". The etymology of "Suchia" can be traced back to the scientific name "Thecodontia", introduced by paleontologist Richard Owen in 1859. Owen derived this name from Greek roots: "theke" meaning "socket" or "cavity" and "odon" meaning "tooth". The name was given due to the characteristic sockets in the crocodile's teeth where they fit when their mouths are closed. Over time, the taxonomic order was renamed and reclassified, eventually becoming known as "Suchia" to include a wider range of crocodile-like reptiles.
