SUBROC is a term that stands for "Submarine Rocket" or “Submarine ROCket”. It refers to a type of anti-submarine weapon that was developed and used by the United States Navy during the Cold War era. The SUBROC was designed to be launched from submarines and could engage and destroy enemy submarines at a distance.
The SUBROC consisted of a rocket that was launched from a submerged submarine's torpedo tube. It carried a nuclear or conventional warhead and had a range of several nautical miles. Once launched, the rocket would propel itself towards the target submarine, either on a straight trajectory or by following a pre-programmed guidance system, depending on the specific model.
Upon approaching the target, the SUBROC would detonate its warhead, causing significant damage or destruction to the enemy submarine. It was capable of both high explosive and nuclear warheads, making it a highly versatile and potent weapon. The SUBROC provided a significant deterrent against enemy submarines, as it could be launched from a concealed and submerged position, giving little warning to the target.
