The studfish is recognized for its unique physical characteristics, measuring around 1.5 to 2 inches in length on average. It features a cylindrical-shaped body with a range of colors, such as olive-brown or dark brown on its back, fading to a lighter coloration on its sides and underbelly. The studfish also possesses several dark, evenly spaced vertical bars running along its flanks, which contribute to its distinctive appearance.
