A strip mine refers to a type of surface mining method predominantly used to extract valuable minerals or materials from the Earth's surface, particularly those found in open or flat land areas. In this extraction process, large quantities of soil, rock, or overburden are removed to expose the desired substances, which are typically coal, tar sand, oil shale, or other important mineral deposits.
The strip mining technique involves the removal of layers or strips of the Earth's crust, one at a time, using heavy machinery such as bulldozers, draglines, or excavators. These machines scrape off the top layer of soil and overburden, which are then stored in nearby piles or embankments. Once the overburden is removed, the valuable mineral deposits are extracted from the exposed strip, often by blasting or drilling, and then hauled away for further processing.
Strip mining can negatively impact the environment due to the massive alteration and destruction of natural habitats, erosion, contamination of water sources, and disruption of ecosystems.
