Straw Foxglove (Digitalis lutea) is a perennial flowering plant that belongs to the family Plantaginaceae. It is widely known for its distinctive tall, slender stems and tubular, light yellow flowers. This species is native to Southern Europe and can be found in various parts of the Mediterranean region.
The Straw Foxglove typically reaches a height of 60 to 120 centimeters, featuring alternate, lanceolate leaves that are smooth and dark green in color. The inflorescence consists of erect, unbranched spikes adorned with numerous bell-shaped flowers. Each flower is approximately 2 to 3 centimeters long, with a tubular corolla that flares out into five lobes, exhibiting striking yellow hues. The blooming period usually occurs during the summer months, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Its common name "straw foxglove" stems from the similarity in growth habit to common foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea), but with yellow flowers instead of the characteristic purple or pink. Although visually distinct, it shares some similarities with other foxglove species, such as containing the same cardiotonic glycosides. However, caution is advised as all Digitalis species are known to be toxic if ingested.
Straw Foxglove is often cultivated in botanical gardens and can be an attractive addition to flower beds or borders in garden landscapes. Its yellow flowers provide a vibrant and unique touch, contrasting with other plants. Additionally, the plant is sometimes cultivated for its medicinal properties, as certain compounds found within it have been traditionally used for medicinal purposes, primarily related to the cardiovascular system.
