This condition primarily arises from a disturbance in the heart's conduction system, particularly the atrioventricular (AV) node. The AV node is responsible for the regulation and coordination of electrical impulses between the atria and the ventricles of the heart. When the AV node fails to transmit these impulses properly, there is a disruption in the normal heart rate and rhythm.
The episodes of syncope associated with Stokes-Adams syncope can be extremely abrupt and unpredictable, typically lasting for a few seconds up to a few minutes. During these episodes, the affected individual may experience symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, profuse sweating, and an exceptionally slow heart rate or, in some cases, no detectable pulse at all.
Stokes-Adams syncope is often caused by underlying heart conditions like heart block or sick sinus syndrome, which hinder the normal conduction of electrical signals within the heart.
