Stictopelia is a taxonomic genus of birds belonging to the family Columbidae, commonly referred to as the dove family. These small to medium-sized birds are found in various regions across Africa, southwest Asia, and Europe. The genus Stictopelia consists of two recognized species, namely Stictopelia cuneata, also known as the African collared dove, and Stictopelia senegalensis, commonly known as the Laughing dove.
Stictopelia species share common characteristics, including a slender body, long tail, and a distinctive collar-like marking around the nape. They are typically ground-dwelling birds that inhabit a variety of open habitats, including savannahs, woodlands, cities, and agricultural areas.
The African collared dove, Stictopelia cuneata, is predominantly found in sub-Saharan Africa and exhibits a pale gray plumage with dark barring on the wing feathers. It has a melodious call consisting of a series of cooing notes. On the other hand, the Laughing dove, Stictopelia senegalensis, inhabits a wider range, from Africa to India, displaying a brownish-gray plumage and producing a distinctive laughing-like vocalization.
Stictopelia species primarily feed on seeds and grains, although they may also consume small insects or fruits when available. These birds form monogamous pairs and construct simple nests made of twigs and leaves in trees or shrubs. They lay one or two eggs per clutch and both parents participate in incubation and feeding of the young.
