SRY, also known as the sex-determining region Y protein, is a gene located on the Y-chromosome in humans. It plays a critical role in determining the male sex during embryonic development. SRY is considered the master switch for male sex determination as it initiates a cascade of events that leads to the development of male specific structures and characteristics.
The SRY gene codes for a protein that functions as a transcription factor, meaning it regulates the expression of other genes. This protein is predominantly expressed in the early stages of gonadal development in males. It binds to certain DNA sequences and activates or suppresses the transcription of target genes that are necessary for the development of testes and male sexual differentiation.
