Sporidesmin toxins are highly potent and can cause a condition known as facial eczema or facial dermatitis. This disease occurs when animals consume pasture contaminated with the fungus that produces sporidesmins. Once ingested, these toxins are absorbed into the bloodstream and are then transported to the liver, where they cause damage to the bile ducts. This liver damage results in an impairment of the liver's ability to process substances and remove toxins from the body, leading to various symptoms and complications.
Affected animals may exhibit symptoms such as sunburn-like skin lesions, itching, increased sensitivity to sunlight, loss of appetite, weight loss, jaundice, and ultimately, liver failure. The severity of the disease can range from mild to severe, with severe cases often resulting in significant economic losses and even death.
In order to prevent sporidesmin-related diseases, farmers and livestock owners often implement management strategies such as monitoring spore counts, avoiding high-risk pastures during susceptible periods, and providing protective supplements or treatments to affected animals.
