Southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) is a large evergreen tree native to the southeastern United States, particularly in the coastal regions from Virginia to Texas. This species belongs to the beech family (Fagaceae) and is considered one of the most iconic and culturally significant trees in the southern states.
This majestic tree can reach impressive heights of up to 50 to 80 feet (15 to 24 meters) and has a spread of 60 to 100 feet (18 to 30 meters) when fully grown. It exhibits a dense, rounded crown with spreading branches that often touch the ground. The trunk is characterized by a large circumference, sometimes measuring over 9 feet (2.7 meters) across and covered in thick, furrowed gray-brown bark.
Southern live oaks are notable for their distinguishing leathery, dark green leaves, which are elliptical or lance-shaped with smooth margins.
