Etymology of SOFT BALL
The word "softball" originated in the United States in the late 19th century. Its name is derived from the fact that the ball used in this sport is larger and softer than the regular baseball, which is the sport softball was derived from.
The concept of softball arose as an indoor alternative to baseball. It was first played in 1887 at the Farragut Boat Club in Chicago. A group of Yale and Harvard alumni, led by George Hancock, devised a game that involved a larger ball and a smaller playing area. Initially, this new sport was known as "indoor baseball" or "indoor-outdoor".
In 1889, Hancock and his colleagues officially coined the term "softball" to describe the game. This was based on the fact that the ball used in the sport was softer and larger than a regular baseball.
