Etymology of SIRENIAN MAMMAL
The term "Sirenian" derives from the Greek mythological creatures known as the Sirens. According to Greek mythology, the Sirens were beautiful yet dangerous creatures that lived on the rocky islands and seduced sailors passing by with their enchanting songs, causing them to shipwreck.
In the 19th century, when naturalists began to classify and name different species, they named the order of marine mammals having a similar appearance to the mythical Sirens as "Sirenia", which included manatees, dugongs, and sea cows. The name Sirenia was chosen due to the mermaid-like quality of these mammals, with their torpedo-shaped bodies, flipper-like limbs, and gentle nature.
