Sir John Hawkins, also known as Sir John Hawkyns, was an English naval commander, shipbuilder, and merchant during the 16th century. He was born in Plymouth, Devon in 1532 and died in 1595.
Hawkins is primarily remembered for his involvement in the slave trade, being one of the first Englishmen to participate in this controversial practice. He organized and executed several slave trading voyages, mainly operating in the West Indies and West Africa. Hawkins is credited with pioneering the triangular slave trade route, which involved carrying enslaved Africans from Africa to the Americas, then bringing valuable goods, such as sugar, tobacco, and gold, back to England.
