Sinus paranasalis refers to a group of air-filled cavities located in the bones of the face and skull, commonly known as the paranasal sinuses. This anatomical structure includes four paired sinuses: the frontal sinus, maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus, and sphenoid sinus.
The frontal sinus is found within the frontal bone, situated above the eyes and behind the forehead. The maxillary sinus, the largest of the sinuses, is located within the maxilla bone, on each side of the nose. The primary functions of the paranasal sinuses include reducing the weight of the skull, providing resonance to the voice, and producing mucus that helps filter, humidify, and warm inhaled air.
Disorders or abnormalities in the sinus paranasalis can lead to sinusitis, which is characterized by inflammation and infection of the sinuses. Symptoms of sinusitis may include facial pain, headache, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, and fatigue. Common causes of sinusitis include bacterial or viral infections, allergies, and structural abnormalities in the nasal passages. Treatment of sinusitis typically involves addressing the underlying cause, managing symptoms, and may include antibiotics, nasal decongestants, corticosteroids, or surgery in severe cases.
