Silverbird is a noun that refers to a specific type of bird species, scientifically known as Buphagus africanus, belonging to the starling family. Named after its distinctive silver-plumage, this bird is primarily found in the grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. Silverbirds are known for their glossy metallic grey feathers, which often appear silver under sunlight, hence the name.
Typically, adult silverbirds measure around 20 centimeters in length and weigh approximately 50 grams. They possess a yellow beak, long wings, and a short tail. These birds are social creatures, often observed in small groups or pairs. Their diet mainly consists of insects, ticks, and other parasites that they pick off from the skin of larger mammals, such as impalas, zebras, or buffalos.
