Sewage, commonly known as wastewater, comprises the various liquid and solid waste materials generated by households, industries, commercial establishments, and institutions. Sewage systems typically consist of a network of underground pipes, known as sewers, which connect individual homes, buildings, or facilities to a centralized wastewater treatment facility. However, in some cases, the treated effluent may be utilized for non-potable purposes like irrigation or industrial processes. In certain regions, particularly in areas with insufficient infrastructure or rural settings, sewage systems may follow a decentralized approach where individual septic tanks or other onsite systems are used to treat and dispose of wastewater.
