Serigraphy, also known as silk-screening or screen printing, is a multi-step printmaking technique that involves transferring ink or other coloring agents onto a surface through a stencil or woven mesh screen. Derived from the Latin word “sericum” meaning silk and the Greek word “graphein” meaning writing or drawing, serigraphy refers to the use of a fine mesh screen made traditionally from silk fabric, although modern versions employ synthetic materials such as polyester.
The process of serigraphy involves creating a stencil by blocking out sections of the screen to create open areas through which ink can pass. This stencil is then attached to a frame, and the screen is carefully placed onto the surface to be printed. Ink is applied onto the screen and spread across its surface using a squeegee or rubber blade. The ink passes through the open areas of the stencil onto the paper or other material beneath, resulting in the desired image or design being transferred.
