Seborrheas, often known as seborrheic dermatitis, is a common chronic skin condition that primarily affects the scalp, face, and other oily areas of the body. It is characterized by redness, itching, and flaking of the skin. This condition is not contagious and is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors.
Seborrheas occurs when the oil-producing glands in the skin, called sebaceous glands, become overactive. This excess oil production leads to the growth of a type of yeast called Malassezia, which in turn triggers an inflammatory response in the skin. The exact mechanisms behind this process are not yet fully understood.
Symptoms of seborrheas can vary in severity, ranging from mild dandruff to severe scaling and crusting of the affected areas. Common areas of involvement include the scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, and creases around the nose and mouth. In infants, it is commonly referred to as cradle cap and may cause yellowish, greasy scales on the scalp.
Treatment for seborrheas typically involves the use of medicated shampoos, creams, or lotions that contain antifungal agents or corticosteroids. Regular cleaning and gentle exfoliation of the affected areas can also help manage symptoms. In some cases, prescription medications may be necessary to control inflammation and reduce excessive oil production.
While seborrheas can be a chronic condition with periods of flare-ups and remissions, it is generally manageable with proper skincare and medical treatment. Consulting with a dermatologist is recommended for an accurate diagnosis and development of an appropriate treatment plan.
