The Scaup Duck, scientifically known as Aythya marila, is a species of diving duck belonging to the Anatidae family. These medium to large-sized ducks are commonly found in North America, Europe, and Asia, inhabiting various freshwater lakes, wetlands, and coastal estuaries.
Physically, the Scaup Duck possesses a compact and streamlined body, with a stout neck and a rounded head. The male and female scaups differ in appearance, exhibiting sexual dimorphism. Males have a dark black head, a white body with black back feathers, and distinctive yellow eyes, while females display a brownish head and body with a pale, grayish-brown face.
These birds are proficient divers, adept at foraging underwater for their primary diet of mollusks, aquatic invertebrates, and plant matter. They employ their specialized bills to locate and capture prey beneath the water's surface. Scaup Ducks are known for their energetic and swift diving abilities, enabling them to submerge to considerable depths and remain submerged for prolonged periods.
