In its simplest form, Sarcosporidia parasites exist as cysts within the muscle tissue of the intermediate host (usually herbivores). The cysts contain numerous mature spores, which are released into the environment when the infected host is consumed by a definitive host (usually carnivores or omnivores).
Once inside the definitive host, the spores are released from the cysts and invade the intestinal wall, developing into specialized stages that can reproduce sexually. After fertilization, they form oocysts, which are shed in the host's feces, completing the life cycle.
