Ryan White (1971-1990) was an American teenager who became a prominent advocate for AIDS and HIV awareness in the 1980s. Born in Kokomo, Indiana, Ryan contracted HIV through a contaminated blood transfusion at the age of 13, during a treatment for his hemophilia. Despite facing immense prejudice and discrimination due to his illness, Ryan fought determinedly for his right to attend public school without being subjected to irrational fears and stigmatization.
His case brought national attention to the issues surrounding the transmission of HIV, as well as raised awareness about the importance of education and compassion towards individuals living with AIDS. Ryan’s advocacy paved the way for the enactment of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act in 1990, which sought to improve access to medical services and support for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
