Etymology of RUGBY LEAGUE
The word "Rugby League" has a straightforward etymology. It combines two distinct elements: "Rugby" and "League".
The term "Rugby" comes from the public school named Rugby School in England, where the sport originated. In the early 19th century, a student named William Webb Ellis is said to have deviated from the standard soccer rules during a game and picked the ball up in his hands, thus creating a new form of football.
