Ructus, a Latin term derived from the verb "ructare," refers to the act or process of belching or burping, predominantly in humans. It is the expulsion of gas or air from the stomach through the mouth, resulting in a characteristic sound and, sometimes, a release of odor.
Ructus occurs as a natural bodily reflex mechanism, aided by the contraction of the diaphragm and relaxation of the esophageal sphincter muscles. It is primarily associated with the release of excess air or gas that is swallowed during the consumption of food or beverages. This air, along with small amounts of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and trace gases, accumulates in the stomach and needs to be expelled periodically.
Typically, ructus is involuntary, although some individuals can induce it voluntarily for various reasons. This reflex process allows for the alleviation of discomfort in the upper digestive system and prevents excessive distension of the stomach. Moreover, it serves as a means of expelling potentially harmful gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, from the stomach, offering relief and minimizing unpleasant sensations, such as bloating or indigestion.
Although ructus is generally harmless and considered a normal physiological response, excessive or frequent belching may indicate an underlying digestive disorder, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, or certain dietary irritants.
