RTTY is an acronym that stands for "Radio Teletype," a digital communications mode widely used in radio transmissions. It refers to a method of sending and receiving text messages over radio waves using teletypewriter-like devices. RTTY operates by converting text characters into binary code, transmitting them as audio frequency tones through a radio transmitter, and then decoding them back into characters at the receiving end.
In RTTY, the binary code usually consists of five bits per character, creating a set of 32 possible characters. The most common variant of RTTY uses a "Baudot code," which assigns specific audio tones to each character for transmission. The radio signal carrying the tones is typically narrowband frequency-shift keying (FSK), where different tones represent ones and zeros.
RTTY allows for reliable long-distance communication, even under suboptimal conditions, due to its use of narrowband signals and digital encoding. While traditionally used for telegraphy purposes, it has also found applications in amateur radio, maritime communications, and military operations.
