ROP stands for Return Oriented Programming. It is a technique used in computer security to exploit programming errors or vulnerabilities in a software system. ROP is a variant of the traditional buffer overflow attack method and is commonly used in modern systems with countermeasures such as data execution prevention (DEP) or code signing.
In ROP attacks, the attacker combines existing code snippets, known as "gadgets," from the legitimate program's memory space to create a malicious payload. These gadgets are sequences of instructions that end with a "return" instruction, hence the name "return-oriented" programming. By chaining these gadgets together, the attacker can execute arbitrary code or tamper with the program's behavior.
ROP attacks are particularly effective against systems that enforce code execution policies by preventing the execution of non-executable memory regions. Since ROP attacks reuse existing code, they do not introduce new code segments that could be blocked by such countermeasures. Additionally, by using gadgets already present in memory, ROP attacks can bypass address space layout randomization (ASLR) protection, which randomizes the memory address space, making traditional buffer overflow attacks less efficient.
To defend against ROP attacks, various countermeasures have been developed, such as control flow integrity (CFI) and stack canaries. These techniques aim to detect or prevent the misuse of control flow to resist ROP exploitation.
