Roger Bacon (c. 1214/1220–1292) was an English philosopher, theologian, and scientist known for his work in the fields of optics, mathematics, and natural philosophy. He was one of the most prominent figures in the development of early scientific methods during the Middle Ages.
Born in Ilchester, Somerset, Bacon joined the Franciscan Order and studied at the University of Oxford and the University of Paris. He gained a reputation for his innovative and experimental approach to scientific inquiry, which went against the traditional reliance on ancient authorities such as Aristotle. Bacon emphasized the importance of observation, experimentation, and empirical evidence in the pursuit of knowledge, and he advocated for the use of mathematics in scientific investigations.
Bacon's major writings include "Opus Majus" (The Major Work), "Opus Minus" (The Lesser Work), and "Opus Tertium" (The Third Work). He made significant advancements in the study of optics, developing theories on refraction and reflection of light, and he even anticipated the use of eyeglasses and telescopes.
