This grasshopper species is characterized by its robust body, reaching a length of up to two inches, with a combination of brown, black, and yellow coloration on its exoskeleton.
The Rocky Mountain grasshopper is typically found in the higher altitudes of the Rocky Mountains, hence its name, preferring open grasslands and meadows as its preferred habitat. It has a remarkable ability to jump considerable distances to escape predators or changes in its environment.
This grasshopper species undergoes a complex life cycle exhibiting incomplete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs in the soil during the late summer, which subsequently hatch into nymphs. These nymphs, resembling miniature versions of the adult grasshoppers, develop and molt through a series of stages before reaching their fully matured form.
