Robert Toombs (1810-1885) was an American politician and statesman primarily known for his participation in the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Born in Georgia, Toombs was a lawyer by profession before entering politics.
Toombs played a significant role in shaping the antebellum South's political landscape. As a member of the United States Congress, he advocated for states' rights and the preservation of slavery, considering it a fundamental aspect of the Southern way of life. Toombs vehemently opposed any compromise with the Northern states that might restrict the expansion of slavery into new territories, notably engaging in debates against abolitionists like William Seward and Charles Sumner.
When Georgia seceded from the Union in 1861, Toombs was instrumental in the creation of the Confederate States of America and initially served as the Secretary of State. Later, he resigned from his cabinet post to join the Confederate army as a brigadier general.
