A rinkhals is a venomous snake species belonging to the family Elapidae and native to southern Africa. Scientifically known as Hemachatus haemachatus, it is commonly referred to as the "ring-necked spitting cobra" due to the distinct black and white bands on its neck, resembling rings.
The rinkhals exhibits a moderately large size, typically ranging between 1.2 and 1.5 meters in length. It possesses a slender body with elongated, cylindrical scales, and its coloration can vary from light brown to gray or olive. The characteristic neck bands mentioned earlier are particularly prominent during defensive displays.
One of the major distinguishing features of the rinkhals is its ability to spit venom, an adaptation seen in few snake species. When threatened, it can aim accurate, stream-like sprays of venom towards the eyes of its perceived attacker. This venom contains potent cytotoxic properties, capable of causing severe pain, tissue damage, and even blindness if not promptly treated.
Primarily inhabiting grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas, the rinkhals is known for its secretive nature and habit of hiding in underground burrows or dense vegetation. It is primarily active during the day but can occasionally be spotted at night. Furthermore, the rinkhals feeds on a varied diet consisting mainly of small mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.
