Riga fir, scientifically known as Abies baltica or Abies obovata var. obovata, is a species of coniferous tree that belongs to the pine family, Pinaceae. It is commonly found in the forests of Latvia and neighboring regions, primarily in the Riga area, hence its name "Riga fir." This medium-sized evergreen tree typically reaches heights of up to 30 meters (98 feet) with a straight and narrow trunk.
The Riga fir is characterized by its pyramidal shape, dense foliage, and needle-like leaves that grow in two rows on opposite sides of the stem. The leaves are dark green in color, measuring approximately 1-3 centimeters long. The tree also possesses cone-shaped fruits, known as cones or seed cones, which are typically purple when young and turn light brown as they mature.
Riga fir is highly valued for its timber quality as it possesses strong and durable wood that is resistant to decay. It is commonly used in construction, furniture-making, and various woodcrafts.
