Rhytidectomy, also commonly known as a facelift, is a surgical procedure performed to reduce the visible signs of aging in the face and neck. It aims to enhance a person's appearance by tightening sagging facial skin, reducing deep wrinkles, and eliminating excess fat deposits that may contribute to facial sagging.
During a rhytidectomy, the surgeon makes incisions typically around the hairline, extending down around the ear and sometimes to the lower scalp, following natural creases and contours to minimize visible scarring. After the incisions are made, the underlying facial muscles and tissues are lifted and tightened to create a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Excess skin is then trimmed, and the remaining skin is re-draped over the newly contoured face and secured with sutures or staples.
Rhytidectomy is considered a major surgical procedure that is typically performed under general anesthesia. It carries the usual risks associated with surgery, including bleeding, infection, anesthesia complications, and scarring. Additionally, temporary side effects such as bruising, swelling, numbness, and discomfort are common after the procedure. However, these usually subside within a few weeks.
