The term derives from the Greek words "rhis," meaning nose, and "encephalon," referring to the brain.
Individuals affected with rhinencephaly typically exhibit various physical and neurological abnormalities. These may include facial deformities such as a broad, flat nose, widely spaced eyes, and an unusually small head size (microcephaly). Furthermore, they may experience intellectual disabilities, cognitive impairments, and behavioral difficulties. Due to the absence or malformation of the olfactory bulbs and tracts, these individuals often present anosmia, or the inability to perceive odors, as well as altered taste perception.
Rhinencephaly is an uncommon condition with uncertain origins. It is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, although the exact cause remains unclear. Diagnosis is typically made through a comprehensive clinical evaluation, specialized imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, and genetic testing when necessary.
Due to the complex nature of this condition, there is currently no known cure for rhinencephaly. Treatment consists primarily of managing the symptoms and providing supportive care.
