Retinervis is a Latin adjective that translates to "having a reverse or backward vein pattern." The term is primarily used in the field of botany to describe specific types of leaf venation, particularly in dicotyledonous plants. Retinervis refers to the characteristic where the main veins of a leaf curve in an opposite direction to the classic pattern, which is known as acrodromous venation.
In retinervis venation, the primary veins of the leaf run from the base towards the apex (the tip), but as they progress towards the tip, they curve and arc backwards, forming a convexity. This vein pattern can be observed by looking at the leaf from the dorsal side (the top surface), where the arching vein structure becomes more apparent. It is the opposite of the common pattern known as pinnate venation, where the veins branch out starting from the midrib and extend towards the edges of the leaf in a fan-like manner.
Retinervis venation is not as common as other vein patterns, but it is observed in various plant families, including some species of Rubiaceae, Meliaceae, and Solanaceae. This peculiar venation pattern contributes to the overall diversity of leaf forms and helps botanists in the classification and identification of plants.
