The infection in animals occurs when they ingest eggs or proglottids (segments) of Raillietina tapeworms. The eggs or proglottids are usually passed in the feces of infected animals, which can contaminate the environment or feed. Upon ingestion, the eggs release oncospheres, which then penetrate the intestinal wall and migrate to various body tissues, where they develop into mature tapeworms. The life cycle is completed when these mature tapeworms produce eggs or proglottids that are then passed through the feces.

Diagnosis of raillietiniasis is typically based on the identification of Raillietina eggs or proglottids in feces or during post-mortem examination. Treatment involves the administration of anthelmintic drugs, followed by appropriate hygiene and control measures to prevent reinfection.
Preventing raillietiniasis involves maintaining good hygiene practices, proper sanitation, as well as regular deworming and monitoring of animal populations.
