The quadriceps reflex, also known as the patellar reflex or knee jerk reflex, is an involuntary response triggered by tapping the patellar tendon. It is a neurological reflex that involves the activation of the quadriceps muscle group in the front of the thigh, which causes a rapid and brief extension of the lower leg.
When the patellar tendon is tapped or stretched, sensory neurons called muscle spindles located within the muscle detect the change in tension and send signals to the spinal cord. These signals are then transmitted to the motor neurons, which innervate the quadriceps muscles. The motor neurons subsequently send a command back to the quadriceps muscles, causing them to contract.
The quadriceps reflex is an important diagnostic tool used in clinical examinations to evaluate the integrity of the spinal cord and the function of the peripheral nerves. An absence or diminished response of the reflex may indicate certain neurological disorders, such as nerve damage or diseases affecting the spinal cord.
This reflex can be tested by gently tapping the tendon just below the kneecap with a reflex hammer. The normal response is a brief and forceful extension of the lower leg, causing a slight kicking motion.
