PYD stands for the abbreviation of the term "Partiya Yekîtiya Demokrat" which translates to the "Democratic Union Party" in English. Originally formed in 2003, the PYD is a political party in Syria that primarily represents the interests of the Kurdish population within the country.
With its headquarters located in the city of Qamishli, the PYD adopts a leftist ideology and aims to promote democratic governance, gender equality, and the recognition and protection of Kurdish rights in Syria. The party advocates for the establishment of a decentralized and inclusive political system that respects the diverse ethnic and religious groups present within the country.
The PYD is particularly associated with its armed wing, the People's Protection Units (YPG), which emerged in 2011. The YPG has played a key role in the Syrian Civil War, primarily fighting against the Islamic State (IS) and seeking to defend the predominantly Kurdish areas of the country.
The party has faced criticism from various international actors due to its alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a designated terrorist organization by several countries. Nevertheless, the PYD has gained recognition as a significant player in the Syrian conflict, and its influence has expanded as Kurdish-dominated regions in northern Syria have become semi-autonomous, forming what is commonly known as Rojava.
