PXE stands for Preboot eXecution Environment. It is a set of protocols that allows a computer to boot and operate on a network without using a physical hard drive or any local storage medium. PXE enables a computer to obtain its operating system and other required files directly from a server on the network.
When a computer with PXE support is turned on, it first sends a broadcast message to the network to discover a PXE server. The PXE server responds with its IP address and the location of the boot files. The computer then downloads these boot files via the network and proceeds to boot from them. This allows the computer to operate even when its own storage devices are damaged or unavailable.
The PXE process follows several steps, including obtaining an IP address from a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, loading the necessary drivers for network connectivity, and downloading the boot image from the PXE server. Once the boot image is downloaded, the computer can execute the necessary instructions to start the operating system installation or perform other network-based tasks.
PXE is commonly used in enterprise environments for network-based operating system deployment, diskless workstations, and remote system management. It eliminates the need for physical media, such as installation discs or USB drives, by relying on network connectivity for booting and accessing software resources. The use of PXE can simplify and streamline system deployment and management processes within an organization.
