Pulmonary arteries, in human anatomy, are the blood vessels responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs for oxygenation. They form an integral part of the circulatory system, specifically the pulmonary circulation, which includes the blood vessels involved in the exchange of gases between the lungs and the heart.
The pulmonary arteries originate from the right ventricle of the heart, receiving blood that has returned to the heart after delivering oxygen to various tissues and organs. The arteries then transport this deoxygenated blood to the lungs through a network of smaller branches, ultimately reaching the capillaries surrounding the alveoli in the lung tissue. Here, an important physiological process called gas exchange occurs, wherein carbon dioxide is removed from the blood, and oxygen is absorbed into it. This oxygen-rich blood is then redirected back to the heart through the pulmonary veins for further circulation to the rest of the body.
The diameter of the pulmonary arteries is generally smaller than that of systemic arteries since they primarily function to transport deoxygenated blood from the heart and not to deliver oxygenated blood to the body tissues. However, they possess thicker and more muscular walls to withstand the pressure exerted by the right ventricle during contraction, ensuring efficient blood flow towards the lungs. Any abnormalities or disorders affecting the pulmonary arteries can disrupt proper pulmonary circulation, potentially leading to respiratory impairments or other cardiopulmonary complications.
