Pseudoryx, also known as the saola or Asian unicorn, is a rare and elusive ungulate species native to the Annamite Range of Vietnam and Laos. The term "pseudoryx" refers specifically to the genus Pseudoryx, encompassing a single extant species, Pseudoryx nghetinhensis.
The saola stands out due to its unique appearance, with distinctive long, straight horns that can reach up to 50 centimeters in length. It has a similar body structure to a small antelope, weighing approximately 90 to 100 kilograms. Its coat is characterized by a dark brown color with lighter markings on the face, neck, and lower body.
Pseudoryx primarily inhabits the evergreen and deciduous forests of the Annamite Mountains, making it well-adapted to these rugged terrains. It is an herbivorous animal that mainly feeds on leaves, stems, and fruits found in its natural habitat.
Due to its limited range and relatively small population size, the saola is listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. It faces a multitude of threats, including hunting, habitat loss, and fragmentation. Efforts are being made to protect this species, with the establishment of conservation programs and the implementation of stricter laws against poaching.
