Protozoans are a diverse group of single-celled organisms belonging to the kingdom Protista. They are characterized by their eukaryotic cellular structure, meaning they possess a true nucleus enclosed within a membrane. Protozoans are mainly aquatic organisms, found in diverse habitats such as freshwater, saltwater, and terrestrial environments.
These microorganisms exhibit a wide range of shapes, including amoeboid, ciliate, flagellated, and sporozoan forms. They are capable of locomotion through the use of cilia, flagella, or pseudopodia, allowing them to move towards food sources or avoid harmful stimuli. Protozoans are heterotrophic, meaning they obtain nutrients by ingesting organic matter, such as bacteria, algae, or even other smaller protozoans.
Reproduction in protozoans can occur asexually through binary fission, where the organism splits into two identical halves. Others reproduce sexually through a process called conjugation, which involves the exchange of genetic material between individuals. Protozoans play essential ecological roles as both primary consumers in food chains and as decomposers, aiding in the recycling of nutrients in various ecosystems. They are also known to be parasitic, causing diseases such as malaria (Plasmodium), dysentery (Entamoeba histolytica), and African sleeping sickness (Trypanosoma brucei). Additionally, certain protozoans exhibit mutualistic relationships with other organisms, such as symbiotic partnerships with termites or in the digestive tracts of animals.
