Premature Ovarian Failure (POF), also known as Primary Ovarian Insufficiency or early menopause, is a medical condition characterized by the depletion or dysfunction of the ovaries in women under the age of 40, resulting in the cessation of ovarian function and reproductive potential earlier than expected.
In POF, the ovary fails to produce a normal amount of ovarian hormones, mainly estrogen, which leads to menstrual irregularities and ultimately infertility. The exact cause of POF is often unknown, but it can be attributed to various factors such as genetic abnormalities, autoimmune disorders, chemotherapy or radiation treatment, and certain viral infections.
Symptoms of POF may include irregular or absent menstrual cycles, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and decreased sexual desire. Additionally, women with POF may experience long-term health consequences associated with estrogen deficiency, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and early onset of menopausal symptoms.
A diagnosis of POF is typically confirmed through blood tests that measure hormonal levels and assess ovarian function. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for POF, but the symptoms can be managed through hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to provide the necessary estrogen and progesterone the body lacks. Fertility preservation techniques such as oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing) may be considered for women desiring future pregnancy.
