Praecocial species typically possess well-developed sensory and locomotive abilities, allowing them to feed, move, and fend for themselves from an early age, often with minimal or no parental care.

Examples of praecocial animals include precocial birds like ducks, geese, and chickens, which are able to leave the nest shortly after hatching and actively search for food. Deer, horses, and antelopes are examples of praecocial mammal species that are able to stand, walk, and follow their mothers shortly after birth. Reptiles like turtles and crocodiles are also commonly considered praecocial, as their young possess well-developed physical capabilities upon hatching, allowing them to navigate their surroundings and seek shelter or food.
