The virus can be categorized into different strains, including PVYO, PVYC, PVYN, and PVYN:O, each with varying degrees of virulence and impact on potato crops. PVY also has a broad host range, being able to infect other Solanaceous plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and tobacco.
Efficient management of PVY involves various control measures, including the use of certified disease-free potato seed, regular monitoring and early detection of infected plants, and integrated pest management strategies to reduce aphid populations. Crop rotation, removing infected plants, and destroying volunteers can also help minimize the spread and impact of PVY. Breeding resistant potato varieties and employing virus-free seed tubers are essential for long-term control and prevention of PVY.
