Potamogalidae is a taxonomic family of small aquatic mammals commonly known as the amphibious shrews. Found in sub-Saharan Africa, this family belongs to the order Afrosoricida and comprises two genera: Potamogale and Micropotamogale.
The members of the Potamogalidae family have adapted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle, residing near streams, rivers, and wetlands. They possess several morphological features that enable their amphibious behavior, such as partially webbed digits and dense waterproof fur. These shrews have elongated bodies with short legs, allowing them to efficiently navigate through aquatic environments.
Typically nocturnal, potamogalids primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates, small fish, and amphibians.
