Porifera is a term used in biology to refer to a phylum of simple multicellular animals that are commonly known as sponges. The word "porifera" is derived from Latin, with "porus" meaning "pore" and "ferre" meaning "to bear," which accurately represents one of the prominent characteristics of these organisms.
Sponges are found in aquatic environments, including freshwater and marine habitats, and are considered one of the oldest animal groups on Earth. They possess a unique body plan consisting of loosely arranged cells that form a porous structure with countless openings called ostia, which allow water to enter the sponge for feeding and gas exchange.
The poriferan body is composed of two main cell layers, the outer epidermal layer and the inner layer of specialized cells called choanocytes. Choanocytes or collar cells have a distinctive collar-like structure that helps create a water current and filter microscopic food particles present in the water.
Porifera exhibit various forms, from encrusting and vase-shaped sponges to more complex types with branching or irregular structures. They can be as small as a few millimeters or as large as several meters in size. The organization of cells and skeletal materials determines the classification of poriferans into different classes and families.
While some sponges can be found in large quantities and play important roles in reef ecosystems, others are present in limited numbers and can serve as indicators of environmental health. Sponges are also valued for their potential medical and industrial applications due to the presence of bioactive compounds within their tissues.
