Polatouche is a term often used to refer to a small mammal native to North America, specifically the chipmunk species. This particular type of chipmunk is scientifically known as Tamias striatus, and it belongs to the family Sciuridae.
Polatouche typically measures between 8 to 10 inches in length, including its bushy tail, and weighs approximately 2 to 5 ounces. It is easily recognizable due to its distinct features, including a reddish-brown fur coat with five dark brown or black stripes running lengthwise on its back, from head to tail. Additionally, it possesses white underparts and a distinct white stripe above each eye.
These small creatures are highly adaptive and have a wide distribution across North America, being found mainly in deciduous forests, woodlands, or areas with thick vegetation that provide ample cover and food sources. They are known for their excellent climbing and burrowing abilities, as well as their exceptional storing behavior.
