The process primarily involves the removal of important minerals like iron, aluminum, and organic matter from the upper soil layers, which are then deposited in deeper areas.
Podsolisation typically occurs due to a combination of factors including the presence of highly acidic precipitation, low temperatures, and the absence of plant roots in the upper soil layers. Acidic rainfall reacts with the soil particles, particularly the iron and aluminum compounds, resulting in their dissolution and subsequent translocation downwards. This leads to the formation of a distinctive soil horizon known as the E horizon or eluviation horizon, which is depleted in nutrients and lighter in color compared to the underlying layers.
The consequences of podsolisation on the environment are both positive and negative. On the positive side, the leaching process helps in the formation of nutrient-rich subsoil layers, which can be beneficial for plants with deep root systems. However, podsolisation also leads to the degradation of the upper soil layers, reducing their fertility and impairing their ability to support plant growth.
