It primarily affects individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV/AIDS, individuals undergoing chemotherapy, or recipients of organ transplants who are on immunosuppressive medication.
The infection occurs mainly within the lungs and can cause inflammation in the alveoli, the small air sacs where oxygen exchange takes place. As a result, the affected individual may experience symptoms such as persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, fever, weakness, and chest pain.
Pneumocystis carinii infection is considered an opportunistic infection, as the fungus is commonly present in the environment and does not typically cause illness in individuals with intact immune systems. However, when the immune system is compromised, the fungus can multiply and cause an infection.
Diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii infection typically involves analyzing a sample of lung fluid obtained through bronchoscopy or induced sputum. Treatment options often include the use of medications such as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, pentamidine, or dapsone, which aim to combat the fungal infection and alleviate associated symptoms.
